Reserva privada Pichigüila

Ensenada de Pabellones, Sinaloa
Reserva privada Pichigüila

In 1966, Dwight Eisenhower, former President of the United States, visited  Ensenada de Pabellones, located on the coast of the state of Sinaloa, Mexico. The purpose of his visit was to hunt in the wetlands of Laguna Chiricahueto with his host, Héctor Antonio “Tony” Pico García. Eisenhower was so impressed by the experience that he encouraged Tony to establish a hunting club. With this push, in 1968 Tony formalized the “Pichigüila Club”, a reference to the wild duck commonly seen in the area.

The business has survived for five decades and today is successfully run by Antonio Pico, Jr. Ensenada de Pabellones extends over  40 468 ha, and contains freshwater marsh ecosystems, coastal  lagoons, mudflats, estuaries, and mangroves, characteristics that make it an excellent habitat for the overwintering of millions of resident and migratory waterfowl and shorebirds. Recognizing the international importance of this wetland, we worked with Tony Pico Jr. to protect 679 ha of his property for 99 years under the environmental easement mechanism, which guarantees the conservation of the wetland ecosystem and, therefore, that the species that live or transit through it will have the environmental services required for their survival. Executed in a sustainable way, this mechanism is compatible with the conservation efforts that Pronatura Noroeste promotes in this wetland complex.
