Teachers as miltipliers of conservation efforts
Teachers at elementary schools in the port of San Carlos, the port of Lopez Mateos and Santo Domingo in Bahia Magdalena, Baja California Sur, were trained on the economic and environmental importance of fishing resources in their community during the workshop entitled The marine environment and fishing.
This exercise, and the subsequent incorporation of these topics into the education plan of schools in the area, enabled the integration of the whole community in the Chocolate Clam Expo, where students presented their scientific, linguistic and artistic skills in front of 300 spectators, with projects about this particular fishing resource.
The success of the workshop and the expo has led organizers to consider making this an annual event and exploring new topics related to the sustainability of the region’s fishing resources. Through these efforts, the participation of teachers allowed Education for Conservation program to expand its reach in this region.
