In June 2014, Bahía de Todos Santos, in Baja California, was given the distinction of World Wave Reserve, making it the first of its kind in Mexico, the second in Latin America and the sixth in the world.

Of particular interest within this bay is the San Miguel beach, located to the north of the city of Ensenada and considered the cradle of surfing in Mexico.

In order to maintain the quality of waves and their environmental characteristics, Pronatura Noroeste has been collaborating with local partners since 2011 to promote the creation of the Arroyo San Miguel State Park, which would cover both the beach and the creek of the same name.

This park will provide a recreational area for the local population, and will allow the conservation of an example of native vegetation and landscape of this part of the Baja California coast.

OBJECTIVES
  • Guarantee the conservation of the environmental characteristics and services of the San Miguel creek and beach.
  • Protect the quality of San Miguel waves and guarantee access to the beach and the creek, for public and recreational use.
  • Maintain the water supply for more than 400 inhabitants of this place.
  • Promote local economic development through low-impact tourism.
LOCATION

The proposed state park covers 143 acres, including the San Miguel beach and 3.7 miles of the streambed, to the north of the city of Ensenada

WORK PROGRESS
  • Recognition of San Miguel Point as part of the Bahía Todos Santos World Wave Reserve.
  • Preparation and promotion of the technical proposal for the creation of the Arroyo San Miguel State Park, in support to the process led by the Secretariat for Environmental Protection in Baja California.
