The North American Bird Conservation Initiative (NABCI) awarded Pronatura Noroeste the “Gary T. Myers Award” for its contributions to the conservation of birds in Northwest Mexico. The award ceremony was held on August 19, 2020 and was attended by several members of the international conservation community.

Legal conservation tools in the Tijuana River Basin
Humans have historically sought to settle near bodies of water, and many times we have forgotten to watch the river. These rivers, in the majority of cities, have been paved, diverted, or even blocked, causing large problems for biodiversity, the recharging of aquifers, and rainwater drainage.

Creation of the Management Program in La Michilia, Durango underway
With a comprehensive view of the basin for conservation work, Pronatura Noroeste collaborates with the management of the La Michilia Biosphere Reserve to facilitate processes that help the integration of the Management Program and the formation of the Advisory Council that supports the area’s governance.

Strategy developed to reduce environmental and social problems due to discharges from the Cedritos Drain, Sinaloa
The Bahía Santa María ecosystem in Sinaloa faces an environmental problem due to contaminated water from the Cedritos Drain discharging in this wetland of international importance. In addition, the drain overflows during rainy season, causing social and public health problems. To find a solution, in November of 2019, Pronatura Noroeste promoted the creation of the Specialized Working Group (SWG) within the Cuenca de los Ríos Mocorito al Quelite Council, with the aim of developing a strategic plan.

As of February 17, 2020, the Pronatura Noroeste team will have a new member, Dr. Sula Vanderplank, who will assume the position of Director of the Terrestrial Ecosystem Conservation Program for the organization.

Municipality of Pueblo Nuevo, Durango has an Ecological Management Program
The Local Ecological Management Program for Pueblo Nuevo was published in the Official Newspaper of the Government of the State of Durago. It establishes the policies for use, protection, and conservation of the municipality’s territory.

Guardian children for a better future
To continue training young Guardians of the Mangrove in Bahía Magdalena, we gave a workshop about plastic pollution as part of the waste separation campaign promoted by the ECOCE ECO Challenge in the primary and secondary schools of Santo Domingo, Baja California Sur.
First guardians workshop
The first workshop to create guardians for Bahia Magdalena mangrove was on May 21st of 2019 at Santo Domingo, Comondú, Baja California Sur. This community -located in the Pacific coast- has direct contact with the mangrove, making it a strategic population for its conservation.

Pronatura Noroeste, A.C. succeeds in GlobalGiving’s Accelerator and becomes recognized partner of GlobalGiving
Pronatura Noroeste, A.C. announced that they have graduated from the GlobalGiving Accelerator program, gaining entry into the GlobalGiving marketplace and becoming a recognized partner of GlobalGiving. As part of the Accelerator, Pronatura Noroeste, A.C. successfully raised $5,074 from 44 unique individual donors to support their project, “Create 50 guardians for Bahia Magdalena mangrove.”

Low impact agriculture
Gavilanes is located in a mountainous area that is difficult to access and where, during the rainy season, it is impossible to enter without a four-wheel drive car, which complicates the transport of staple food items. In this Cora community, located in the municipality of El Navar, Nayarit, as part of the National Reforestation and Water Harvesting Program and with support from Pronatura Mexico and the Coca Cola Foundation, we installed a 741-square-meter greenhouse inside the perimeter of the Amado Nervo Technical Secondary School no 58.
