At the break of the 21st Century, the inhabitants of Santiago Ixcuintla, Nayarit, were surprised by an unusual piece of news. The Vallarta Chan family, owners of Finca La Papalota, announced the sighting of Jaguar (Panthera onca) footprints within their land.

This April 22nd, we celebrate International Mother Earth Day. It is a date that allows us to remember the invaluable wealth that nature provides us daily and, at the same time, the risk of losing it.

In the distant month of October 2006, the staff of the Bird Laboratory of the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur (UABCS) banded for the first time a Red Knot (Calidris canutus roselaari) in the facilities of the Exportadora de Sal SA de CV, in Guerrero Negro, Baja California Sur. It was for banding purposes, placing a color flag with the code 000 on the bird´s leg.

Los Cabos

Los Cabos is the region at the end of the Peninsula of Baja California. Where the natural landscape and seascape are just spectacular – the desert meets the sea in San José del Cabo, and life shines with every wave.

The North American Bird Conservation Initiative (NABCI) awarded Pronatura Noroeste the “Gary T. Myers Award” for its contributions to the conservation of birds in Northwest Mexico. The award ceremony was held on August 19, 2020 and was attended by several members of the international conservation community.

With the objective of monitoring populations of Jaguar (Panthera onca) – a species in danger of extinction – in its territory, GPS collars were placed on three healthy individuals in the La Papalota Area Voluntarily Designated for Conservation (AVDC) in Nayarit. The captured specimens included two females and one male.

During the time of Easter holydays, the Pejerreinas – a group of women from the Gulf – and Pronatura Noroeste installed a n information stand on the beach of the Gulf of Santa Clara to share information about the spawning of the Gulf Grunion and the migration of shorebirds like the Pacific Red Knot with the community and tourists.

A multidisciplinary team of conservationists managed to place GPS collars on two jaguars in the “La Papalota” Area Voluntarily Designated for Conservation in Santiago Ixcuintla to learn more about their way of life and find the best strategies to conserve the feline in this area of Nayarit.

The introduction of exotic species has a negative impact on biodiversity; they depredate native species and modify the habitat, affecting the ecosystem. To protect the mangrove and conserve local nesting sites for birds, the Protection and Recovery of Threatened Species program developed a project to control the Possum Grape Vine in Marismas Nacionales Nayarit Biosphere Reserve.

Pronatura Noroeste received the Ecological Merit Award 2016 in the framework of the Conference of Parties (COP 13), on the Agreement on Biological Diversity, in the city of Cancun, Quintana Roo. The ceremony, held Sunday December 4 2016 at the International Convention Center in Cancun, was chaired by Rafael Pacciano Alamán, Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat).
