During the recent health crisis caused by COVID-19, we have become aware of human fragility but also the resilience and strength we have to respond to humanity’s challenges. Today, as we can finally travel and be together again, it is essential to keep in mind other challenges that have grown considerably and require our attention. Among these challenges are the climate crisis, which is undeniable worldwide. Baja California and the Guadalupe Valley are not strangers to temperature rising and water scarcity, on which the region’s wine industry depends.

As part of its commitment to the environment and sustainable development, the 43rd World Congress of Vine and Wine established a Sustainability Committee of which we are part of as Pronatura Noroeste, along with civil organizations and academics. This committee’s goal is to explore options to collaborate in mitigating climate change in the Guadalupe Valley region. Therefore, the Arroyo San Miguel State Park was identified as an ideal site to capture the attention of participants and organizers of the event.

Restoration and conservation of Arroyo San Miguel contributes to generate substantive benefits for the region and its community. Here are some of its features:

  •       San Miguel Creek, a 67-hectares coastal landscape, is part of a 242.55 km² hydrological basin, which rises in the Sierra de Juárez. Its 10-kilometers long throughout reaching San Miguel beach, is habitat of up to 112 species of plants, 47 mammals, and 107 birds. It was decreed as a Natural Protected Area under the category of State Park on September 17th, 2021.
  •       The creek and beach of the same name are used as a recreational area by locals. Its vegetation cover helps to mitigate the region’s temperature, and the aquifers in the area recharges through its course.
  •       The rocks and sand transported by it helps maintain the characteristics of the famous wave of Playa San Miguel, a place recognized as “the cradle of surfing in Mexico”.

Join us in the effort to restore and conserve San Miguel Creek. Together we can provide the community with green areas, and contribute to mitigate climate change in the area. With your economic contribution, we will achieve the following:

  •       Clean and remove debris.
  •       Restore vegetation cover.
  •       Reforest with native trees and plants.
  •       Design and build an interpretive trail.
  •       Signpost and guarantee safety for users.
  •       Acquire and place benches, trash cans, signs, and public restrooms.
  •       Develop environmental education and volunteer programs.

Your contribution to Arroyo San Miguel State Park supports the sustainability actions of the 43rd International Congress of Vine and Wine.

Your participation is your legacy to nature!
