A 741-square-meter greenhouse in Nayarit forms part of a comprehensive project to provide access to healthy food and reduce pressure on natural resources.

Gavilanes is located in a mountainous area that is difficult to access and where, during the rainy season, it is impossible to enter without a four-wheel drive car, which complicates the transport of staple food items. In this Cora community, located in the municipality of El Navar, Nayarit, as part of the National Reforestation and Water Harvesting Program and with support from Pronatura Mexico and the Coca Cola Foundation, we installed a 741-square-meter greenhouse inside the perimeter of the Amado Nervo Technical Secondary School no 58.

The building is part of a comprehensive project for the residents of Gavilanes to have access to a healthy diet during the whole year, with a lower cost of production, both in economic and ecological terms; its antecedent was the construction of a rainwater collection pot from which the water to supply the crop is obtained. The parent association and school leadership will be responsible for protecting the infrastructure. The operation of the greenhouse will involve students, teachers from the “Cultivation Techniques” subject, and the community, who will work on the cultivation of staple items like radish, chard, broccoli, lettuce, onion, watermelon, and tomato.

This project seeks to reduce the pressure on natural resources for growing food. In short, harvesting rainwater, working together, and producing vegetables for education and food purposes results in a low-impact agricultural exercise and promotes sustainable development.
