Within the actions of the Fishery Improvement Programme (FIP) in Marismas Nacionales, Nayarit, fishermen from two coastal communities participated on key trainings on 18th and 19th of January. Participants focused on the implementation of digital harvesting in commercial flake production, a crucial step towards sustainability and efficient management of fishery resources in the region.

During the training, with the participation of 50 fishermen from Los Morillos, Nayarit, and Teacapan, Sinaloa, they were guided through this technological tool that will facilitate the documentation process and make their fishing activity more accurate. This step will not only improve the efficiency of the data capture process, but will also make a decisive contribution to the responsible management of resources.

“All the data input from fishermen with these tools is key to create the frameworks that will allow us to better manage the fish population within Marismas Nacionales,” explained Mauricio Cortes, regional coordinator of Pronatura Noroeste. He assured that this will minimize the error rate in the current management of fisheries information, data that will be available to partners participating in the FIP.

Key medium-term agreements were made as a result of the training. Among them, participants agreed to continue with personalized training in both sites (Los Morillos and Teacapan), supported through the alliance with Cetmar #23. Through this agreement, students and fishermen’s children will collaborate with the digital capture of flake production as part of their social service, a synergy that will strengthen ties between academia and the fishing community.

The Polytechnic University of the State of Nayarit (UPEN), the municipalities of Tecuala and Escuinapa, and the Cetmar 23 Teacapan joined our goal for sustainable fisheries in Marismas Nacionales.

Pronatura Noroeste’s sustainable fisheries programme works closely with three key species: Snook (Centropomus viridis), Red Snapper (Lutjanus colorado) and Yellowtail (Cynoscion xanthulus).

These joint efforts are essential to ensure a prosperous future for the fishermen of Marismas Nacionales, where sustainability and conservation are key priorities.
