To restore 35 hectares of the Colorado River riparian corridor, Pronatura Noroeste produced 35 000 native trees and shrubs, which will be utilized in reforestation activities this fall.

Alberto Ruiz Ortega, the Restoration Coordinator, said that the Miguel Aleman restoration site currently seeks to improve the quality of the habitat to maintain and increase populations of priority species since reforestation benefits fauna with areas of refuge, reproduction, and rest.

For Pronatura Noroeste, it is very important to make the environmental value of the site and the restoration activities conducted in it known. For this reason –through Reforest San Luis– the commission promotes a volunteer program that reconnects the community with conservation and natural spaces, said Ruiz Ortega.

Therefore, between December 2017 and June 30, 2018, seven days of reforestation and native tree production took place, during which 487 volunteers collaborated in the production process, from preparing the substrate to filling the bags, seed cleaning, and planting.

For the Colorado River delta restoration efforts, nurseries of native plants are essential as they provide raw materials for the site — alamo, sauce, sweet mesquite, mesquite screw, cat’s claw, chamizo ash, strawberry bush, and various varieties of palo verde.

Our challenge is to produce new native species that enrichen the biodiversity for the benefit of flora and fauna, added the Restoration Coordinator, Alberto Ruiz Ortega.
