On August 5 and 6, a workshop on “Good Governance for the Conservation of Shorebirds and their Habitats in the Upper Gulf of California and Colorado River Delta Biosphere Reserve” was held in San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora, Mexico.
Miguel Vargas, deputy director of Pronatura Noroeste, who participated in the workshop, highlighted the relevance of this type of activity by mentioning that: “This site is considered of hemispheric importance for shorebirds because hundreds of thousands of them come to it from different countries throughout the continent; and the workshop was precisely to learn about governance issues and to create collaborative processes to work together with civil society and government to achieve sustainable development.” The workshop was aimed at leaders, local organizations, civil society organizations, professionals and public and private institutions, and people interested in conservation; it was given by Diego Luna Quevedo, a specialist in this subject.
Pronatura Noroeste, the most important conservation organization in northwestern Mexico, carries out strategic actions on a daily basis in its Bird Conservation Program, in which they carry out habitat protection and restoration measures, research, monitoring, and educational workshops for their conservation. Pronatura Noroeste monitors the shorebirds that use 14 priority wetlands in northwestern Mexico and conducts studies for the conservation of seven of these species.
