Ejido Pueblo Nuevo, an example of community and government collaboration for responsible use of forest resources

The Ejido Pueblo Nuevo, a community that relies heavily on forest resources, is located in the mountainous area of Durango. The surrounding ecosystem extends over 230 000 hectares in the heart of the Sierra Madre Occidental. Its tributaries are the Baluarte and Acaponeta rivers, which provide water to southern Sinaloa and northern Nayarit. This water flow is essential for a wetland complex known as Marismas Nacionales de Nayarit, one of the most important in the Mexican Pacific.

For the residents of Ejido Pueblo Nuevo, responsible use of forest resources is crucial, since it creates more than 400 jobs and is one of the main income sources in the community. Hence, the need for sustainable use in the extraction, cultivation, protection and use of all forest resources. Among the environmental services provided by the forest is carbon sequestration, oxygen production and being the habitat of a remarkable biodiversity.

As Pronatura Noroeste we work together with residents and government entities on conservation, protection and monitoring at the site. Among other activities, we prepared the environmental agenda for the Pueblo Nuevo local authority. This served as an input for the Durango State Government to release the Local Ecological Management Program in 2019, which regulates the use, protection and conservation of natural resources in the municipality.

Among the vulnerable mammals living in the forest of Pueblo Nuevo are the Puma (Felis concolor), the White-tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and the Ocelot (Leopardus pardalis). Vulnerable birds in the same area include the Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis), the Guajolote (Meleagris gallopavo), the Green Macaw (Ara militaris), the Mountain Parakeet (Rhynchopsitta pacghyrhyncha) and the Long-eared Coa (Euptilotis neoxenus).

The most abundant plants in the forest are the Royal Pine (Pinus engelmanni), the Slash Pine (Pinus copperi) and the White Oak (Quercus splendens).
