Pronatura Noroeste will collaborate in the design of a Master Plan for the Prevention and Mitigation of Impacts on Shorebirds in the Ojo de Liebre Lagoon Complex with Laura Ibarra, a fellow of the Cornell University Coastal Solutions Program.

The Ojo de Liebre Lagoon Complex, located in the west-central portion of the Baja California Peninsula, is a site of hemispheric importance that receives more than 200,000 shorebirds each year. The proposal is based on the anthropogenic and climate change impacts that pose potential threats to migratory shorebirds.

“For example, the Attention to Environment Contingencies Protocol and Climate Change Adaptation Program issued by the El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve, identified threats such as: fuel spills from vessels, illegal species collection, brine spills in the lagoon, temperature rise, sea level rise, and hurricanes,” said Ibarra.

The Universidad Autónoma de Baja California, El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve – CONANP, Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Sur, Salt Exporter, and Pronatura Noroeste are participating in the design of this plan. Ibarra said that the first stage of this proposal seeks to build a network of academics, civil society organizations, and companies to work in an interdisciplinary way and achieve mitigation of these impacts.
