Last November we  made an important alliance for education and conservation by  signing a collaboration agreement with the Instituto Tecnológico Nacional de México (Tec NM) campus Bahía de Banderas. This effort in favor of the environment aims to create a framework for academic, scientific and technological linkages, which includes the exchange of information, technical advice and the production of scientific publications in the fields of interest of both institutions.

Among the  objective of this agreement are to enable students from Tec NM in  Bahía de Banderas to carry out professional residencies in the projects developed by Pronatura Noroeste. In this way, students will be able to acquire specific skills in their professional training, will find space for the practice of the knowledge acquired and will collaborate with fresh and innovative ideas in conservation projects in this region of the country. Without a doubt, the benefits will be plenty  to reinforce university education, the environment and wellbeing for local communities.

The agreement signing event was attended by Violeta Garnica Romero, Director of Tec NM in Bahía de Banderas, accompanied by Adrián Maldonado Gasca, Assistant Director of Planning and Liaison. Representing Pronatura Noroeste at the event was Mauricio Cortés Hernández, Regional Coordinator for Nayarit, Jalisco and Colima.

Director Violeta Garnica said that this agreement will allow the activation and use of the Institute’s laboratories equipment, which will be of great benefit to the technological community and the different communities of the Bay.

For his part, Mauricio Cortés emphasized the good education level of the campus´ young students; in fact, some of them already collaborate as park rangers in the Isla Marietas National Park. He reiterated that the agreement with Pronatura Noroeste will set the tone to generate new lines of research aimed at projects for the preservation of mammals and fish, as well as some focused on reefs. He mentioned that the occasion is ideal for joining diverse actors and incorporating efforts for the benefit of Isla Marietas and Isla Isabel National Park, in Nayarit.

Both institutions agreed that the implementation of the agreement will have an educational, community and environmental impact on the Natural Protected Area in which Pronatura Noroeste works, with a coverage of 1,383.01 hectares.
