We would love to invite you to walk with us through the forest of poplars and willows, and to see the nursery of native plants and trees in our Miguel Alemán restoration site, but we still cannot. Even though social and recreational activities have been restricted for the past months due to the health emergency, we can learn about the flora, fauna, and use of water in the Colorado River Delta from home.
Yuliana Dimas, Community Involvement Program Coordinator, spoke with us about the activities they conduct and how they have been adapted to a digital format to continue promoting conservation culture.
This program created the Reforest San Luis campaign and environmental education activities to strengthen ties with the communities of San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora and Mexicali, Baja California.
The activities in which you can participate include workshops and practicum like:
- Colorado River Restoration Initiative. You will learn about water management in the region, what you can do for conservation, and reforestation activities in the restoration sites and in the city.
- City Free of Plastics. In this workshop, you will learn to identify the primary environmental problems in your city, the classification of plastics, and how to properly separate solid waste. In addition, we will teach you how to prepare to make your own compost.
- Urban Bird Program. Here you will learn about resident and migratory birds in the region and we will teach you how to use e-bird to record your sightings on the platform.
- Citizen Scientist – Naturalista. Explore the flora and fauna of the region through technology and learn how to enter your first records in Naturalista. You won’t need to go to a special site to start, you can do it from your home garden.
- Growing seeds native to the Colorado River. Discover the native plants of the delta and help the production of Poplars, Willows, Palo Verdes, and Mesquites with which its reforestation will happen next season.
- Pollinator gardens. Venture to know the most common pollinator species in the urban ecosystems of San Luis Río Colorado and Mexicali and prepare a native garden for the pollinator community at home.
