The detection of and attention to irregularities in the environment, such as illegal fishing and extraction of species, are urgent needs in the Bahía de Loreto National Park. To have timely surveillance of the ecosystem, Pronatura Noroeste technicians, together with park staff, conducted the first flight of the Edge 130 drone, which is linked to the specialized software Marine Monitor (M2), on February 2nd.

With the permanent use of this technology, it will be possible to record useful images in the area and detect any suspicious behavior in a timely manner. With this, the authorities will be able to intervene in accordance with the law and file the corresponding complaints. Both the drone and the M2 system will be operated by National Park personnel to protect the ecosystem and enforce environmental regulations in this area, officially considered a Natural Protected Area (NPA).

This successful test will give way in the coming months to more extensive flights and reconnaissance exercises in the bay. In the short term, the objective is to achieve more efficient and precise surveillance, and to make the most of material and human resources, to strengthen supervision, monitoring, inspection, and surveillance in Bahía de Loreto. With the drone and the software in operation, the necessary response times will be available to provide security to the personnel who carry out these tasks.

It should be noted that this technology for conservation is complemented by various protocols for joint action by the authorities. With this activity we contribute to environmental sustainability and the economic benefit of local communities, something that could be replicated in the other regions and threatened ecosystems in our country.
