The warm waters of the Gulf of California and the Pacific Ocean make Northwest Mexico a privileged region, with an amazing variety of fish, crustaceans, and mollusks. But the richness of ecosystems is not unlimited, since the natural balance does not permit unbridled exploitation.
In addition to the firmly rooted activity of local fishing, large national and transnational corporations extract thousands of tons of fishery products daily. In fact, it is estimated that fishing in Mexico is a source of income and well-being for around 1 million inhabitants and generates 250- to 300,000 direct jobs and about 2 million indirect jobs.
At Pronatura Noroeste we consider it critical to ensure the sustainability of fisheries. For this reason, it is imperative to establish a capture scheme with responsible practices and to move towards a modern fishing administration that respects the legal framework only with producers who view their work in the long-term and ensure species enjoy habitats in optimal conditions and achieve population recovery.
