July 12, 2025, Ensenada Baja California — With the objective of strengthening marine conservation efforts and the sustainability of fisheries in Mexico, the organizations Pronatura Noroeste and Consejo Mexicano de Promoción de los Productos Pesqueros y Acuícolas (COMEPESCA) signed a collaboration agreement in the city of Ensenada Baja California, Mexico.

Citlali Gomez Lepe, President of COMEPESCA, and Valeria Towns, Conservation Director of Pronatura Noroeste, celebrated the formalization of a strategic alliance aimed at promoting good fishing, raising consumers’ awareness and facilitating connections among key stakeholders in the sector.

Among the commitments established between both organizations, we highlight the exchange of relevant information on traceability, sustainability and markets, the joint development of communication strategies, environmental education, and the strengthening capacity for fishing cooperatives and stakeholders in the productive sector.

This agreement represents an opportunity to scale up the efforts that both organizations have been carrying out in favor of more responsible fishing, making connections from the community to the end consumer.

Citlali Gomez highlighted the importance of joining forces with organizations such as Pronatura Noroeste to continue promoting the transformation of the fishing sector and the conservation of the ecosystem.

The agreement includes the formation of a Permanent Working Committee composed of Juan Roberto Baez Montoya, an expert in generating sustainable value chains in artisanal fishing in Northwest Mexico for Pronatura Noroeste, and Luis Bourillon Moreno (COMEPESCA); both will be responsible for coordinating and monitoring of actions and ensuring the effective implementation of the agreements.

The signing took place within the framework of the Cocina La Baja event, organized by the Secretaría de Pesca y Acuacultura of the government of the State of Baja California (SEPESCA) in coordination with COMEPESCA. The event brought together representatives from the fishing and aquaculture sectors, marketers, and allied organizations, reaffirming the urgency to advance toward  a more fair and  resilient food system.

With this alliance, Pronatura Noroeste and COMPEPESCA uphold their commitment to the conservation of marine ecosystems, well-being of coastal communities and finally the promotion of an informed and responsible consumption culture.
