The National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (Conanp), the Delegation of the Federal Attorney General’s Office for Environmental Protection (Profepa) in Baja California Sur, and Pronatura Noroeste A.C. are working together to strengthen inspection and surveillance in Cabo Pulmo National Park. To this end, they carried out an exercise of possible scenarios for surveillance over the next three years and pooled resources and capacities to make significant progress in achieving a more advanced surveillance scenario.
On November 15, the “Cabo Pulmo Inspection and Surveillance Information Center” was inaugurated to increase the presence of authorities with inspection and surveillance powers in the Park. The Center provides a space for inspectors and other authorities to stay and has equipment and information for operations design.
In the context of this collaboration, Profepa has committed to having a greater presence at the site and has assured that it will carry out inspection and surveillance activities at least three times a week in collaboration with the park rangers assigned to Cabo Pulmo National Park.
At the same time, Pronatura Noroeste and CONANP are working on designing a surveillance logbook for mobile devices that will allow the integration of a geographic information system with the actions carried out, the human uses identified, and the irregularities detected.
Finally, tourism service providers have expressed their interest in collaborating. They are currently preparing, together with Paralelo 28 and the Se buscan Héroes campaign, agreements and mechanisms to contribute to these actions on an ongoing basis.
Based on these efforts, those interested in tourism and conservation in Cabo Pulmo hope to see greater compliance with environmental regulations in the park.
