The NOSSA Group, Northwest Civil Society for Environmental Sustainability, presents Caring for what matters. 2021 Environment Budget: Analysis and proposals. An analysis of the 2021 Federal Expenditure Budget Project and the Federal Executive’s Initiative to reform, add, and remove various provisions of the Federal Law of Rights, with emphasis on the National Commission for Natural Protected Areas (CONANP).

This analysis, led by Pronatura Noroeste, Sociedad de Historia Natural Niparajá, A.C. and Wildlands Network, identifies a series of successes by the Federal Executive. At the same time, it proposes concrete improvements to strengthen the operation of Natural Protected Areas (NPAs).

The proposed modifications constitute a first step at reversing the serious budget cuts CONANP has suffered since 2016, which would allow: (1) having a greater presence of the federal government in the national territory, (2) strengthening community groups that monitor protected areas, fight fires, and undertake productive projects, (3) reducing the environmental impacts of tourism, and (4) strengthening the financial sustainability of the Commission itself.

It is important to note that CONANP is in charge of managing one-sixth of the national territory, and, for this, it has a budget allocation of less than 0.02% of programmable spend.

Taking care of NPAs is taking care of nature, it’s taking care of health, it’s taking care of wellbeing, it’s #CuidarLoQueImporta (Caring for What Matters).
